Best to color hair wet or dry?

I'm going to color my hair again tomorrow, and I bought a new color and brand I've never used before just cause I like the color... but it says on the bottle to wet hair and then towel dry. I've never done it that way before. My hair has always been dry when coloring my hair. So does it really matter if your hair is dry or wet when coloring?

Most boxes do say dry hair, and for permanent color I'd say always dry, but if they're asking for wet hair first, it's probably a temporary color. Having wet hair would make it easier to color mostly just the outside of your hair, making it easier to wash out when you want.

Still, I'd say, the first time using a hair dye, follow the instructions. There may be chemicals that need the water to activate too.

What brand of colorant is that? Dry is usually best because hair is pourous and if it is wet it has already absorbed water, thus not soaking up as much of the colorant as it normally would. It will produce subtle results I would imagine.

I would go with what is says on the box, because its the best for that product even if it might be different from what you usually do when coloring your hair.

Not really - it might drip a little more if you don't dry it properly, but it does help get all the conditioner and natural oil out of your hair (which can stop colour taking).

Dry so it can penetrate the hair follicles, if it's wet it fills the hair up, and the color wont be distributed right.

If you have hair that is as dry as straw, then do it damp. It helps to keep the color from being soaked up so much that it doesn't color your hair.

But if the bottle is saying it then i'd do it that way. It may effect the way the color takes or goes on.

Follow the box instructions. Most color wants you to have dry hair, I remember using a few products (non-permanent) that said towel dried hair.

I personally color my hair when it is dry; however I would follow the recommended instructions since some formulas are different and require wet hair to be completely effective.

I've always had the best results from damp hair. I would follow the directions though because if you don't you could end up with some whacked out hair.

I think it's basically saying not to blow-dry your hair. Towel it dry as much as you can, then let it air dry the rest of the way. You just never never dye your hair immediately after blow drying it.

Following THIS manufactures directions. They created this product and they know how they want in applied. Different products have different application processes, follow directions. Some of the advise posted in not correct. Best of luck.
